Each autumn the skies are filled with hot air balloons for the Wairarapa Balloon Fiesta. They launch daily around the district and a highlight is magical Night Glow where tethered balloons light up the sky.
The Golden Shears is the world's premier sheep shearing and woolhandling championship held annually in Masterton. The exciting, three-day event keeps spectators on the edge of their seats.

The Wild Challenge at Pukaha, is a 10km back country trail run and 23km road cycle held in and around the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre north of Masterton. Held each September.
New Zealand’s premier international men’s road cycle tour is coming to Masterton in January 2016. The New Zealand Cycle Classic, a UCI sanctioned international stage race, will attract top riders and give spectators plenty to cheer about.
Petrol head heaven has taken on a new meaning in Masterton thanks to the purpose built Masterton Motorplex Drag Racing strip. National competitions held on the 850m long track give fans a fast and furious day out.
Each summer – favourable beach conditions permitting – Castlepoint hosts its annual beach horse races, which date back to 1872. These days they’re a unique family day out with the emphasis on entertainment and picnicking.
